Linked collections from two centuries of Indological studies are preserved between the library of the Institute of Indology at Tübingen University, the Lippisches Landesmuseum, the Lippische Landesbibliothek and the Landesarchiv NRW-OWL – all in Detmold. They stem from the engagements of Friedrich August Rosen (1805-1837), Friedrich “Suleiman” Rosen (1856-1935) and Valentina Stache-Rosen (1925-1980) with Indian studies, ranging from philological studies of ancient India and Sanskrit, to analyses of Indian theatrical productions in the 19th century and Urdu literature, and to photography of south Indian artistic expressions in the second half of the 20th century. Next to letters and manuscripts by these three members of the Rosen family, the collections of Tübingen and Detmold hold a vast photographic collection of South Indian and Tibetan arts and architecture, ethnographic objects from Tibet and northern India, manuscripts surrounding the genre-setting theatre play Indar Sabha of Hassan Agha Amanat (first staged in 1853), low-quality water colorations of religious motives emblematic of northern India’s composite culture (Mohamed, 2007), as well as maps in Hindustani and documents linked to the scholarly engagements of Germans with India through the arteries of British empire (Manjapra, 2014). Still largely untapped, these collections from South Asia in the German periphery form alternative repositories of knowledge and patrimony to the collections held in the former imperial capitals and other imperial nodal points.
Über den Vortragenden
AMIR THEILHABER is a post doc researcher at the Department of History of Bielefeld University and the lead investigator of a research project on the provenances of the ethnological collections of the Lippisches Landesmuseum in nearby Detmold. His Habilitation project is titled “The Ethnological Collection of the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Peripheral Detmold. A Glocal History of Conglomeration, Fragmentation, Indifference and Contestation from 1835 to the Present.” Theilhaber completed his BA in International Affairs at Vesalius College – Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2006), his MA in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the Hebrew University Jerusalem (2009), and his PhD in History at the Technical University Berlin (2018). He is the author of a book on the German Orientalist scholar and foreign minister Friedrich Rosen (De Gruyter, 2020).
