Musical Instrument Collection

In 1999, the Institute of Musicology was donated and loaned a collection of historical wind instruments by Dr. h.c. Karl Ventzke (1933–2005). After acquisitions from the loan stock, it comprises about 150 objects. The institute thus has one of the most important collections of instruments at German universities. The main focus is on the wind instruments of the symphony orchestra at the end of the nineteenth century, the development of the flute from 1800–1925, “bassoon” and “bassoon” from Savary (1824) to Heckel (about 1910), oboes, clarinets, saxophones, horns, trumpets, and trombones. The collection documents the stormy technical development in instrument making of the nineteenth century. It features spectacular objects such as the early Heckelphon No. 18, a tárogató, a “Stuttgart bassoon” or an alto transverse flute from Theobald Boehm's own workshop. Most of the collection is included in the eMuseum of the MUT.
