Friends of the Museum

On 1.12.2019 the association of the "Friends of the MUT. Society for the Promotion of the Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT" was founded. It supports the museum in saving and preserving its numerous collections, researching them and making them accessible to the public.

The MUT

The Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT was founded on October 1, 2006 as the central institution of the University of Tübingen. It acts as an umbrella institution for the approximately 70 scientific collections - the largest number at any university in Germany. MUT is also the only university in the world to hold shares of no less than two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a record in the Guinness Book.

Duties and responsibilities arising from this rich heritage include organizing the collections in a responsible manner, preserving the objects for future generations, and using them for research, teaching, public education, and the university's reputation. Our core concern of scientific communication is ensured through numerous regional and national cooperations, through exhibitions, scientific conferences, public events, our own research as well as its publications, but also with the help of students through practical teaching formats in the master profile "Museum & Collections" and interdisciplinary in the Studium Professionale.

The Society

On December 1, 2019, the Society for the Promotion of the Museum of the University of Tübingen e.V., the Friends of the MUT, was founded. This association aims to support the work with the university-wide collections, their activities in research, teaching and education as well as the public presence of science.

It helps to implement museum educational and general educational offers in the collections and sub-museums of the MUT. It promotes special exhibitions in order to present the university's stacks to a large public, each time from a new point of view. It can facilitate the acquisition and development of new forms and media of presentation in order to increase the attractiveness of the permanent exhibitions, and it contributes to the publication of the universal exhibits by financially supporting exhibition catalogs and collection brochures.

Through active educational outreach, the Association also seeks to encourage private collectors and patrons to continue the century-old tradition of endowments to the University.

Your advantages

As a member of the Friends of the MUT, you will of course have free admission to all departments of the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Hohentübingen Palace; you can participate in all guided tours free of charge and will be personally invited to special events.

Joining the association gives you a glimpse behind the scenes of the unknown collections through access to otherwise closed holdings and allows you to experience the work on special exhibitions up close through previews. In addition to an exclusive program of guided tours, for example free summer or themed lectures, at the end of the year a compilation of the treasures of the month presented in the Schwäbisches Tagblatt in the Museum Alte Kulturen at Hohentübingen Castle is sent to association members free of charge as an annual calendar.

In order for the association to become even better known, more active and more attractive in the future, it is also dependent on you and would be pleased if you would join. We would like to thank you for recruiting new members with a small gift.
