360° Exhibitions
Since 2019, MUT has offered 360° exhibitions in a digital format, making exhibitions and collections more accessible via a digital tour. The virtual visit is made possible by a series of panoramic images of the premises. These offer numerous interactive features, including explanations of exhibition objects, as well as videos and audio clips that provide further context. This allows past special exhibitions at MUT to remain visible, showcasing closed or rarely accessible collections and providing new context for existing works.
Temporary Exhibitions
Agora – Monuments of Democracy (360°)
This 360° panorama allows you to explore the Museum of Ancient Cultures' temporary exhibition on ancient democracy (April 1st to August 23rd, 2026) in the Knights' Hall at Hohentübingen Castle on your own device. This allows you to explore the exhibition layout virtually and read all the accompanying information at your leisure.
Tour of the Sander house (360°)
This digital panorama allows you to explore the rooms of Evamarie Sander's house in Unterjesingen as they were when bequeathed to the university in 2023. Many of the objects on display in the exhibition 'What Remains. Evamarie Sanders' Life, Family and Academic Work' can be seen in their original locations.
Baden-Württemberg speaks (360°)
The travelling exhibition is divided into two thematic sections. The first section highlights the diversity of dialects in Baden-Württemberg. Maps and audio samples illustrate the differences in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The second section focuses on cultural change in rural areas. Drawing on a wealth of interview recordings from the Arno Ruoff Archive, the exhibition illustrates the significant shifts in daily and professional life over the past century. The exhibition was conceived and realised by Prof Dr Hubert Klausmann and Dr Mirjam Nast. It was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection, the University of Tübingen, and the Association for the Promotion of the Swabian Dialect.
Troia, Schliemann and Tübingen (360°)
In 2022, the Museum Ancient Cultures at Hohentübingen Castle celebrated its 25th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the University of Tübingen Museum MUT organised the special exhibition ‘Troy, Schliemann and Tübingen’, in collaboration with the Institute for Prehistory, Early History and Medieval Archaeology and as part of a series of practical seminars with students. 2022 also marked the 200th birthday of the legendary discoverer of Troy, Heinrich Schliemann, and the University of Tübingen celebrated more than 30 years of Troy-centered research: This provided plenty of inspiration for the choice of theme for the 2022/23 annual exhibition at Hohentübingen Castle. On display from October 28th, 2022, to May 21st, 2023, in the Knights' Hall at Hohentübingen Castle, the exhibition is now available as a digital 360° experience.
May 19th, 1971 (360°)
The theme of the virtual exhibition is Historical and Cultural Anthropology itself. On May 19th, 1971, the Tübingen institute abandoned its former name, 'Volkskunde', of its own accord. The documents and objects on display, as well as the video contributions of students of Historical and Cultural Anthropology presented exclusively in the virtual exhibition, illustrate and explain the difficulties involved in such a fresh start for an entire academic discipline, both in terms of content and institutional structure.
This virtual exhibition centers around on what appear to be ordinary household objects, which only reveal their significance as symbols and artefacts of everyday culture through the explanations and contextualisation provided by students at the Institute of Historical and Cultural Anthropology.
The 1000 names of Vishnu (360°)
„The 1000 names of Vishnu“ centers around two Indian manuscripts. They contain Sanskrit text with beautiful illustrations of Indian mythologie. The digital tour features exclusively four Bharatanatyam dances performed by professional Bharatanatyam dancer Janani Suresh Ram, which wonderfully round off the experience.
„Life and Meaning... it's personal.“ Tübingen Students with Morgan O'Hara (360°)
In this virtual tour, the MUT presents works of students who confronted personal questions together with New York artist Morgan O'Hara. The results are not only charcoal drawings, but also sculptures and installations that offer a quite literal insight.
This MUT virtual exhibition showcases the first bipedal primate, Danuvius guggenmosi. Through a reconstruction of the male specimen's skeleton, known as 'Udo', the exhibition offers a close-up look at this internationally significant discovery, which challenges previous hypotheses regarding the evolution of bipedalism.
Permanent exhibitions and collections
This panorama introdurces a unique collection of the University of Tübingen, the Herbarium Tubingense, which is situated at the Morgenstelle since 1968. The virtual tour offers insights in the everyday work of the collection, famous personalities and further aspects of the Herbarium itself.
A special highlight of Hohentübingen Castle is the castle observatory, which was built in 1812 by Johann Bohnenberger. This virtual tour was created as part of a practical seminar organised by the MUT. Alongside the famous astronomer, it highlights the significance of the site and the history of the building. There are numerous audio points and videos providing information on the subject and showing the observatory from all angles.
360° projects
Schliemann – Troia – 360°. A dialogue between scenography and digital curation (360°)
This unique 360° exhibition provides an insight into the work of museums, focusing specifically on scenography. A model created during a seminar was digitised and expanded virtually. Those involved discussed the process repeatedly, and excerpts from these discussions are displayed throughout the exhibition spaces. This gives visitors a unique insight into an ongoing process.

EX MACHINA. Leonardo da Vinci's machines between science and art (360°)
This virtual exhibition focuses on almost 50 large replicas of the machine designs based on Leonardo's drawings. The objects reconstructed by Italian craftsmen are not staged auratically, but are supplemented with modern equipment in workshop rooms.
