MuseumVirtuell – A VR exhibition made by students
The Exhibition
In the summer semester of 2021, the interdisciplinary course MuseumVirtuell took place at the University of Tübingen. In addition to the ancient studies expertise on contorniates—special late antique coinage with extraordinary image programs—the students learned the basics and use of virtual reality. Based on this, the participants designed their own VR exhibition and realized it in the Museum Lab application of the Dutch company ImproVive.
The course project, which was carried out jointly by the university's departments of ancient numismatics and digital humanities and was awarded an Open Educational Resources prize by the Dr. K. H. Eberle Foundation, is now presenting its results.
In this exhibition, thanks to the latest technology in virtual reality, visitors can interact with 3D models of Tübingen's holdings of contorniates. Those objects are normally kept in display cases behind bulletproof glass or in the depot. Using this technology, visitors can 'hold' those objects in their hand and additionally interact with "human avatars" to discuss facts about the exhibits.
The Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT will exhibit the results of this student exhibition project from 16 October to 28 November 2021. Take the chance to visit a VR-supported exhibition and actively immerse yourself in virtual reality!
Curated by students Sonia Diemunsch, Florian-Julius Revellio, Johanna Rost, Siyao Li and Isabelle Vetter under the direction of Kevin Körner (Digital Humanities) and Stefan Krmnicek (Ancient Numismatics).
