Old Observatory

The so-called "Old Observatory" was built from 1955 to 1957 for the newly founded Astronomical Institute of the University of Tübingen, which was formerly located at Waldhäuserstraße 64. In October 2001, the institute moved to the Sand. After this move, the observatory building became the property of the city of Tübingen, while the telescope, a 30-cm refractor, remained in the possession of the university. It was built in 1924 by Carl Zeiss Jena for the private observatory of Privy Councillor Carl Bosch, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1931. It was originally located in Heidelberg and was only brought to Tübingen after the war, financed by the DFG. Today it is only used for public demonstrations.
