Moulage Collection

The University Dermatological Clinic in Tübingen houses its own moulage collection. In 1905, the young dermatologist and later professor and founder of the Tübingen Dermatological Clinic, Paul Linser (1871–1963), used moulages to train prospective physicians. Many generations of physicians were trained and tested on such wax models. Most of the moulages were wax casts and replicas of diseased or malformed skin areas and genitals, which were recreated in a lifelike manner. The current collection of 280 moulages consists of two individual collections: a dermatological one from the University Dermatological Clinic and a tropical medical one from the German Institute for Medical Mission (Difäm). Outstanding objects are the replicas of terminal diseases that have become rare today, such as lupus and syphilis (picture), plague and smallpox. A selection of objects can be found in the eMuseum of the MUT.
