Mathematical Instrument Collection

The Mathematical Institute owns a collection of devices and instruments with a focus on the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, which were used for practical exercises in geodesy, descriptive geometry, in graphical and numerical methods. These include theodolites (picture), measuring rods, special drawing instruments, integrimeters, and mechanical calculators. In addition, the collection includes some rare, older objects from the Tübingen Observatory, which date back to the eighteenth century. Until about 1960, practical exercises in geodesy – also in the field – and descriptive geometry were compulsory in the curriculum for teachers majoring in mathematics.
