Kölle Collection of Paintings

The Kölle Collection of Paintings consists of the legacy of Christoph Friedrich Karl von Kölle (1781–1848), a Württemberg diplomat, writer, and political scientist born in Stuttgart. During his stays in Rome and Paris, he collected more than 50 paintings from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. After King Wilhelm I of Württemberg refused a purchase, the collector bequeathed his paintings in 1848 to the University of Tübingen, where he had initially studied and taught as a private lecturer. It is the only surviving evidence of private collecting in Württemberg in the nineteenth century, which is why the Kölle painting collection is protected as an independent group of monuments. A tondo (circular painting) by Lucas Cranach the Elder is currently on permanent loan to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
