Gärtner Collection at the Herbarium Tubingense

The “Gärtner Collection” comprises two scientific bequests. It was donated to the university by Emma Gärtner (1818–1875), daughter of the botanist Carl Friedrich Gärtner (1772–1850), on January 9, 1860. It contains a carpological collection of about 600 fruits and seeds, mostly preserved in coverslips, the majority of which are by Joseph Gärtner (1732–1791). Among them are quite a few type specimens that still serve as irreplaceable evidence for international research. Another part of the collection goes back to Carl Friedrich Gärtner: an assemblage containing bastard plants.
