Collection of Paintings of the University

This collection includes works by old masters as well as contemporary paintings. The latter are also purchased, for instance, as part of the “Invited Artist” project. Among the special works, for example, is the large, impressive painting by the Offenburg astronomical photographer and painter Julius Grimm (1842–1906) from 1895: The “View of the Full Moon” (image). The oil painting currently hangs in the Knights' Hall of Hohentübingen Castle and is open to the public. In addition to its size, it is particularly impressive for its almost photorealistic painterly quality. Grimm produced his view of the moon with the help of three-dimensional models based on his own photographs. How the large version in Tübingen came to the university is unclear. What is known is that Tübingen geologist Wolf von Engelhardt, alerted by the caretaker, found the painting in the attic of the Neue Aula in 1986.
