Collection Micropaleontology

An extensive collection on micropaleontology was established in the Department of Geosciences. It is assigned to the Paleontological Collection. Especially sediment samples collected by drilling contain fossil microorganisms. Such often unicellular microorganisms are of great importance for stratigraphic and taxonomic research and for environmental and climatic questions of geological history. Since the 1950s, renowned micropaleontologists, such as Alfred Eisenack (1891–1982) and Hans Gocht (1930–2014), conducted research and taught in Tübingen. In 1976, the collection already included 11,500 specimens. Since 1983, the institute has published the monographic series “Tübingen Micropaleontological Notices”. Currently, several scientists from Tübingen are working in this field.
