Biochemical Instrument Collection

The Biochemical Instrument Collection houses historical laboratory equipment from the former “physiological-chemical institute” (since 1885/86). Among the preserved objects from the time of the “Schlosslabor” since 1816, the world's oldest biochemical laboratory, are an iron retort, several digestion crucibles, and a beam scale.

Special instruments for hemoglobin research, for example, date from the time of the physiological-chemical institute in Gmelinstrasse (1886–1964). Most of the collection is housed in today's Interfaculty Institute of Biochemistry (IFIB); a selection of remarkable exhibits can be seen in the permanent exhibition “Tübingen Castle Laboratory – Cradle of Biochemistry” at Hohentübingen Castle.
