Archaeobotanical Collection

The Archaeobotanical Collection of the Institute of Natural History Archaeology (INA) has been built up since the 1970s with seeds and fruits from botanical gardens and intensive collecting activities in Europe and the Near East. About 6000 plant species are used mainly by archaeobotanists to identify plant finds from archaeological excavations. These ancient objects are also part of the collection. They include cultivated and wild plant finds from famous Oriental excavations, such as Troia (Turkey) and Qatna (Syria), as well as charcoal from Paleolithic caves in southwestern Germany, all of which provide information about the environment, agriculture and diet of the people of that time.

To the collection in the eMuseum (selection)

Highlights of the Collection
