Drill Core Collection

The newly constructed building of the Geo and Environmental Center (GUZ) at Morgenstelle, built between 2015 and 2018, is home to a high-quality repository. Parts of the Mineralogical Collection as well as a collection of drilling and sediment cores are stored in it. They are kept on a floor space of about 250 m².

In Tübingen, geology research has been carried out with the help of drill cores for many decades. As early as 1920, a 92.9-meter-long drill core from the Lengetal II borehole near Geislingen passed from the Staatliches Tiefbohramt to the Tübingen collection (Fossil index, catalog no.: 18822). The core collection today comprises cores of about 3.5 kilometers in length; of these, more than two-thirds are marine cores.
