Festival mood on 18th November 2016

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the Museum der Universität Tübingen MUT is dedicating a symposium to a central question of its existence: To what extent should scientific collections at universities or the central curatorships that supervise them act as genuine museums, to what extent should they build up professionalised museum structures and, where necessary, even act accordingly entrepreneurially? Above all: Can they do that at all and is it sensible? After all, at first glance the establishment of a museum is not necessarily one of the core university tasks of research and teaching.

This complex of questions has not only accompanied the MUT since its founding in autumn 2006. It is also viewed controversially within the network of scientific collections and the Gesellschaft für Universitätssammlungen e.V. (Society for University Collections). Even the science policy committees and the representatives of the universities do not assess the problem uniformly.

The MUT, which has committed itself to a correspondingly offensive policy, now wants to subject this question to a fundamental debate for the first time. We are therefore very pleased that we have been able to attract both competent and relevant speakers. They will each develop their own perspectives on the topic of the conference, which will also differ in detail.
