Collection of Recent Prehistory

The teaching collection of the Institute of Early History goes back to the prehistorian and Tübingen professor Robert Rudolf Schmidt (1882–1950), who founded the Institute of Early History in 1921.

The education of students was at the core of the development of the collection objects. In addition, the collection also houses some assemblages of supraregional importance. These are mainly finds from excavations of the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age wetland settlements at the Federsee, which have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Lake Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011. Also on display are objects from the Iron Age fortified settlements of the Heuneburg on the upper Danube and Heidengraben near Grabenstetten on the Swabian Alb. A large number of objects can also be found in the eMuseum of the MUT.
