Collection for Ethics and History of Medicine

Im Jahre 1961 wurde das Institut für Geschichte der Medizin eingerichtet. In der Folge vereinigte man das Institut mit dem Lehrstuhl für Ethik in der Medizin zum Institut für Ethik und Geschichte der Medizin. Es erhielt vielfältige Schenkungen von Tübinger Professoren, Kliniken und Instituten, darunter eine verstörende Sammlung, die Hans Fleischhacker (1912 –1992) im Jahr 1943 für seine Tübinger Habilitationsschrift heranzog, besteht aus mehr als 600 Hand-, Fuß- und Fingerabdrücken überwiegend jüdischer Insassen des Ghettos Litzmannstadt – nahe Łódź, Polen. Der damalige Rassenbiologe und SS-Obersturmführer Fleischhacker wollte anhand dieser Bestände vermeintlich morphologische Unterschiede zwischen den Handflächen von Juden und Nichtjuden belegen. Es ist die einzige Sammlung ihrer Art. Durch sie erhalten wir heute authentische Einblicke in das bizarre Zusammenspiel von Ideologie und Wissenschaft während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus.
