Collection of mouldings

The collection of plaster casts built up by the Institute of Classical Archaeology since the beginning of the nineteenth Century now consists of about 370 objects. The casts of famous statues, most of them life-size, from the largest European museums, as well as reliefs and architectural fragments, offer a fascinating tour of ancient art history from its beginnings to the Roman Imperial period.

Among the oldest casts in the collection is one of the Lacocoon group found in Rome in 1506, its marble original is currently in the Vatican. Particularly impressive casts also include the Apollo of Belvedere, the Diana of Versailles, the Discus Thrower of Myron, the Farnese Hercules, and the Nike of Samothrace.
