Work Contemplation in front of Sculptures
The human body belongs to the oldest topics of art – from the first representations of Venus from the “Hohle Fels” to ancient sculptures which have been role models and inspiration for subsequent generations of artists over and over again, right up to and including the contemporary sculptures by Antony Gormley which reduce the body to its basic forms. How is the human body represented and what makes it such a popular subject? How are differentiated beauty ideals made visible in art? What effect does the work have and why? These and further questions will be discussed by means of the sculpture of antiquity and Gormley’s works.
