Collection of Recent Prehistory

The teaching collection of the institute was established by Robert Rudolf Schmidt, the then director of the Prehistoric Research Institute, at the beginning of the 20th century. In the selecting of the collection objects, the education of the students was the most important criteria. In addition, the collection also houses several complexes of supra-regional cultural-historical significance. They are presented in the exhibition collection and are explained with research-historical aspects. Thereby, these are mainly finds from excavations of the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age wetland settlements at the Federsee. They are part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Prehistoric Lake Dwellings around the Alps”. Furthermore, the Iron Age fortified settlements of Heuneburg on the Upper Danube and Heidengraben are presented on the Swabian Alb.
